As I sit down to write this, my heart weighs heavy with a blend of sorrow and cherished memories. Losing my cousin, who was more like a sister to me, has been a profound journey of emotional tumult. Yet, as a mother of two, I find myself grappling with the complexities of grief, love, and the secrets we keep to protect those we cherish.

My cousin battled metastasis in silence—a secret she chose to keep confined to herself and, unexpectedly, to me. Understanding her decision to shield even her parents from her pain has been one of the most challenging aspects of her passing. Initially, I thought her parents were aware and perhaps, were just maintaining a brave face. When I learned they too were in the dark, the burden of her secret became even heavier. The realization that she bore her suffering alone, without her parents' knowledge, added a profound layer of sadness to our loss.

Despite the many cousins and friends she had, she chose to confide only in me. At first, I struggled with understanding why. Why burden me with such a heavy secret? But as time passed, I became profoundly thankful for the trust she placed in me. This trust allowed us to spend her remaining days with a depth of connection and love that might have been lost to pretense. We didn’t waste time on the superficial; every moment was meaningful, filled with genuine love and support.

Revealing the full extent of our shared experiences to her father was heart-wrenching. It was a conversation filled with tears and smiles as I recounted the ways we supported each other, the depth of our talks, and the little adventures we managed despite her illness. It felt like reopening a wound, but it was also a moment to honor her bravery and our bond.

The weight of her decision—to protect her parents from worry while she herself was in so much pain—was immense. As a daughter and a mother, I could see the profound love she held for her family, a love so deep that she chose to bear her burden alone rather than cause them any pain. This bravery, however, had its own cost. For her parents, it was a devastating blow, a second unimaginable loss, as they had already lost a child not too long ago. The sorrow of seeing their child suffer and eventually pass without being able to do anything must be the most terrible form of grief.

And now, even as I feel a bitter relief that she is no longer suffering, I find myself caught in moments where I painfully wish she were still here. Her laughter, her courage, and her presence are irreplaceably etched in my heart. In quiet moments, I still reach for my phone to share a thought with her, only to be reminded once again of her absence.

Throughout this entire ordeal, my realizations about life and love have deepened. I've learned that secrets, no matter how well-intentioned, carry a weight that can alter relationships and deepen sorrows. The strength required to keep such secrets is both admirable and heartbreaking. I’ve also come to understand the immense value of being present for those we love. Each moment is precious, and love, when freely given, can bring light even in the darkest times. Above all, I’ve recognized the complex layers of protection we build around those we love and how, sometimes, these protections can come at great cost.

In loving memory of my cousin, I move forward with these lessons etched into my being, hoping to embody her strength and her capacity for love as I raise my own children. Her journey has taught me the true meaning of courage and the irreplaceable value of every moment spent with loved ones.

PS.

Be brave to take lots of pictures with your loved ones. You never know when they might be all you have left.
